Rabbi Budow

Dear Parents:
I’d like to thank everyone who made our trip day such a rousing success- the PTO and several other generous donors once again came through for the school and made this happen! The trips both to Lakewood and Washington, DC were meaningful and important to our students, who arrived back at school tired and happy. Again, I want to thank our teachers and administrators; particularly Rabbi O and Mrs. Kornsgold, for all of their hard work. The results of these excursions once again prove to me their importance in maintaining and encouraging school spirit. Shared experiences outside of the classroom play a vital part in nurturing the sense of community at Abrams and need to be held on a regular basis, especially since we are a community of such diverse geographical populations.
That being said, it is unbelievably almost Thanksgiving, and that means it’s time for our annual Grandparents Thanksgiving Feast. Last year we had a gym filled with parents, grandparents, students, teachers, administrators, and friends of AHA who came together to celebrate the holiday and the school, and we are happy to say that we will be hosting our celebration again this year on November 23, 2016 (more details to follow).
Aaron Weinstein, turkey fryer extraordinaire, has once again agreed to be our head turkey chef, and he and his cast of volunteers will start the fryers early in the morning so that they are done in time for our lunchtime feast. The PTO has agreed to organize this event, the teachers and students will present entertainment with lots of music, and we are guaranteed to enjoy another memorable day with our families, especially grandparents. **Please note that this event is costly, so if you are able to make a donation to offset the expenses please call me as soon as possible.
Finally, staying on the topic of school spirit, we will hold a Shabbaton in Lakewood, NJ for the older students (date TBA). Lakewood has become one of the major Jewish communities in the world, and we are fortunate to have teachers and administrators who live there and welcome our AHA students into their homes. It was obvious that the visit to Lakewood for Sukkot was very meaningful for our students, and it will be a treat for them to experience the fullness of living in a vibrant Jewish community by sharing in the holiness of Shabbat with their teachers and classmates.
During these days preceding Thanksgiving, we have much to be thankful for within our Abrams community.
L’Shalom-
Rabbi Ira Budow

EITC and LLC Opportunities

Dear Abrams Community:
I am very proud that Abrams has built an infrastructure at Abrams that provides our students with everything that a day school needs for success. Just during the past year we have added a new music teacher, a school nurse, and a new resource room teacher. I am extremely proud of my staff, and when I observe them in the classroom and on school trips their actions reinforce my conviction that we have a winning team at Abrams.
How does one maintain this environment of success? Quite simply, the EITC program has made this happen and can continue to do so with YOUR help. There are even more opportunities for Abrams to benefit from this PA tax credit program now. As you may know, last year the Jewish Scholarship LLC was formed that enables individuals who cannot participate through their businesses participate in the EITC program as individuals. Abrams received over $100,000 from LLC funding last year, and the Jewish Scholarship LLC has just told us that it has applied for additional EITC funds that will be available very soon. The entire process could be complete within the next few weeks.
Time is critical- if you are an individual who pays $5,000 or more in PA State income taxes you may be eligible to join the LLC and participate in the EITC program on behalf of Abrams. The Abrams administration is not expert on this program, but we are in contact with the people at the Jewish Scholarship LLC and at the Foundation for Jewish Day Schools who are proficient in the workings of the program and will walk you through the entire process, answer your questions, and make participation very simple.
Please do not ignore this message- the results of our participation will determine next year’s allocations from EITC and significantly impact our ability to continue to provide the very best education and services to as many Jewish children as possible.
Please call me (215) 584-7919 and I will tell you whom to call. For more information please visit:

Best,
Rabbi Ira Budow

Josh Shapiro Visit

Josh Shapiro, Democratic candidate for PA Attorney General, spoke to Abrams middle school students this week and encouraged them to practice tikkin olam in their communities in whatever ways that resonated with them. Josh related how he started a letter writing campaign when he was in 5th grade at an area day school asking for religious freedom for Soviet Jews. This campaign became international, and resulted in freedom for a family whose son Avi celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Josh’s synagogue and now resides in NYC with his family.

Josh has made a career in public service, including serving in elected office as a PA State Representative from Montgomery County, PA and as a Montgomery County Commissioner.
The visit was particulary sweet for Abrams, since Josh was accompanied by his wife, Lori, who is an Abrams alumna who graduated in 1987. Lori and Debra Hartenstein Goldfarb were classmates at Abrams and enjoyed this opportunity to catch up. Lori’s brother Jason also attended Abrams, and his children are currently students at the school. Dor L’dor!
Many thanks to Josh for visiting us and to Ellie Neubauer, Lori’s mom and a long-time supporter of Abrams, for facilitating his appearance.

  • Please do not ask students to open any doors- parents must report to the front office and check-in before entering the school.
  • No student or other person should use the lunchroom doors other than for dismissal or emergency purposes.

These rules are for our children’s safety.

Thank you for your cooperation!
