Kindergarten
“Crunchy, crunchy hear the noise, made in leaves by girls and boys.”
The children had a a great time chanting this poem as we continued to learn about Fall! Our shared reading this week consisted of the poem titled “The Squirrel” as well as a review of the colorful leaf poem.

1st Grade
As October comes to an end first graders were introduced to plane and solid shapes. They classified and compared plane shapes to solid shapes based on their geometric properties.
Ask your child to compare and contrast a square and a rectangle.
We also shaped play doh into letters to make their short e spelling words. They are ready for their spelling test on Friday!
I wonder what the bonus word will be.

2nd Grade
Second grade did a fantastic job working on their first book report for the year. Say “I LOVE TO READ!”
Dr. Porwancher sets the tone of the morning with the 2nd graders by doing yoga exercises. It’s a great way to start the day off calm and focused.
3rd Grade
Third grade students shared their first book report. They told about their book by making a sandwich. The students did such a great job, I was hungry listening to them share.
4th Grade
This week 4th grade started a new novel! They are reading Shiloh and we are super excited to learn tons of new things from this book. The class will be focusing on vocabulary and development throughout the book. Everyone enjoyed the first chapter so we cannot wait to keep reading.

Grades 5-8 Classroom Showcase

6th, 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies
With our first full week at school in over a month, we are really in the swing of learning. On Wednesday, 8th graders took a test on The Age of Reform that preceded the Civil War in the United States and have started learning about the events that will lead up to the Civil War. The 7th graders are seeing how the 13 separate colonies are starting to gel together to be ready to protest unfair British policies (with a test this coming Tuesday on Chapter 4). The 6th graders have finished Ancient Egypt (also with a test this Tuesday) and have started Ancient Greece.
Middle School Science Update
Grades 5/6 have just completed the first test on Investigation 1. We are now working on setting up stream tables to model and show the students erosion and deposition of earth materials, and how that creates the variety of land forms we see around the surface of the Earth.

Grades 7/8 are starting a Moon study. Students will start with a historical perspective of man landing on the moon, to current explorations on the moon. This week, students will examine the pattern of the phases of the moon, and use models to help demonstrate how that works.
Math Update
Our year has been extremely busy, even with all the days off for the holidays. The class has been learning to solve multi-step equations and inequalities, setting up equations to solve real world problems, transforming formulas, and compound and simple interest problems. We will be winding up this chapter with our second test of the marking period. The end of the first marking period is quickly sneaking up on us!

Language Arts
We’re having a lot of fun in Honors English this week. 6th, 7th and 8th graders were excited to start reading a new novel, The One and Only Ivan, The Giver and Of Mice and Men respectively. We’re also working on our second composition, paying close attention to organization and transitions.
6th Grade Jewish History
Morah Raya’s 6th grade Jewish History class worked on creating Mini Israel. Mini Israel is an a park in Latrun, Israel and contains miniature replicas of buildings and landmarks in Israel which attracts tourists from all over the country.
The students did research on their assignment and then recreated famous landmarks for the class. The activity is a great way to learn about the history of Israel in a hands-on and creative way.

All boys/girls in grades 6th-8th grade who would like to try out for the basketball team are welcome to on the dates listed above. The tryouts will be held in the Abrams Gymnasium from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. All students must have transportation home no later than 5:00 p.m. For further information please contact Mr. Gowton.
Girls first practice: Wednesday, Nov. 6
Boys first practice: Thursday, Nov. 7.
All practices will be held in the Samuel Abrams Gymnasium from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Final roster will be posted in gymnasium the following day of tryouts.

Reminder- AHA Security Procedures:
- All parents should use the front door to enter the school with key cards and not the back doors. Parent swipe cards only work at front door.
- Please do not ask students to open any doors- parents must report to the front office and check-in before entering the school.
- No student or other person should use the lunchroom doors other than for dismissal or emergency purposes.
These rules are for our children’s safety.

Birthday Celebrations at School
When sending birthday treats into school to celebrate that special day for your child, please consider sending in a healthy treat, such as frozen fruit bars, rice cakes, fruit salad or cups, sugar free pudding snacks, yogurt cake or pie, cheese sticks, light popcorn or air popped popcorn (when age appropriate), pretzels, carrots/celery (when age appropriate).
Please do not send anything with nuts due to allergies.
In order to maintain a consistent kashrut policy and to avoid confusion, ALL orders for birthday cakes/cupcakes MUST be ordered from Cramer’s Bakery, 16 E. Afton Avenue, Yardley. Cramer’s will deliver the order to the school at a discounted price.

Car Pool Rules:
All Parents who Car Pool:
Please note that the car pool line is for grades N and K only. All other students are to be dropped off in the front of the building.
Parents who use the back for drop off should follow the directions of the teachers in the parking lot. They are there to assist students and maintain a safe environment.
Under no circumstances are parents to park their cars in the middle of the line and leave them unattended to walk students into the building.
** We ask that parents refrain from cellphone use in the parking areas while dropping off and picking up their children.
